|Fancy Underwear Everywhere for "Boxers and Bras" Event
|Itˇ®s not your average fundraiser and itˇ®s getting some double-takes from folks here in our hometowns. Reporter Samantha Suttle looks ahead to next weekˇ®s "Boxers and Bras For a Cause."
Fancy underwear -- everywhere -- on display, loud and proud at businesses all across Sioux City. Itˇ®s all for the June E. Nylen Cancer Centerˇ®s first-ever "Boxers and Bras For a Cause" event on October 16 at City Hall. Money raised will help pay for colonoscopies and mammograms for folks who canˇ®t afford them.
"What has happened and what we wanted to happen is to really raise awareness to educate and help people know that they need to be screened. And weˇ®ve actually already had a couple of people call, who are looking for funding for colonoscopies," says Tracy Shook of the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.
Shook says while the "Bras For a Cause" idea has been done elsewhere, they chose to include boxers to focus on another preventable cancer.
"We decided that we really do need to raise awareness for colon cancer. Itˇ®s very high on our side of the state," says Shook.
And the cancer center has had quite a response so far. More than 50 entries in a variety of creative themes and designs, like one designed by a group at St. Lukeˇ®s Medical Center.
"We just took pink pom poms and sewed them onto the bra to signify bumps. And our message is to be aware of any changes in your breasts and your breast health," says Susan Hall, who decorated a bra entry.
A memorable money-raiser with a life-saving message.
"So hopefully if it helps a couple people be screened and it prevents someone from getting cancer, weˇ®ve done our job," Shook says.
And given Siouxland underwear its five minutes of fame.
